Description
The Atherstone Top Lock and basin on the Coventry Canal, built in the 1780s with later repairs, is a canal lock and basin constructed from English bond brick, featuring a coping made of large sandstone blocks. The end wall to the right of the lock has large quoins, although some parts of the coping have been replaced with concrete blocks. The basin's retaining walls also incorporate large sandstone blocks. At the time of the survey, the basin was drained. The lock features both single and double gates. The section of the Coventry Canal from Atherstone to Fazeley was completed by 1790.
