Description

The Assembly Rooms in Tamworth were built in 1889 for Tamworth Corporation. This building features a right-angle plan and is constructed of brick with ashlar dressings, topped with a slate roof. Designed in the Italianate style, it stands two storeys high with an attic and has a symmetrical five-window front, with a three-window section that projects forward beneath a segmental pediment.

There are three entrances adorned with angle pilasters, a frieze, and a cornice, along with narrow overlights above the panelled doors. The first floor showcases round-headed windows with archivolts and small-paned glazing, while the attic features architraved windows with decorative friezes and cornices. The building has an ashlar plinth and brick channelled rustication at the ground floor, topped with a platt band. The first floor includes a sill band and impost band, with brick angle pilasters and a top frieze and cornice. The gable is pedimented and features pilasters with foliate capitals, an entablature with the date, and a boldly carved town arms supported by mermaids.

The right return has a seven-window arrangement with a similar first floor above a narrow lean-to projection that includes an entrance with rusticated brick piers, a cornice, and a stone-coped parapet, along with paired panelled doors. The left return mirrors this design, featuring brick channelled rustication at the ground floor. The rear of the building has a narrower gabled wing with a return and rear lean-to outshuts, as well as small stacks.
