Description
The Halifax Building Society, originally built as a bank around 1900, is a single-storey structure designed in the Edwardian Baroque style. Constructed from ashlar stone, it features a parapeted roof and a seven-bay curved facade. The six central bays create a symmetrical composition, while a two-storey bay is located to the right. The facade showcases channelled rustication, a top entablature, and a balustraded parapet.
The entrance on the left side is framed by rusticated pilasters and includes an ashlar doorcase with angle pilasters, an architrave, a frieze, and a consoled cornice. It has paired three-panel doors with two small-paned lights above, also flanked by pilasters, a cornice, and shell and foliage cresting. A modillioned cornice runs along the top entablature, and a clock face is set in a cupola above. The entrance on the right is simpler, featuring an architrave, a pulvinated frieze, and a pediment, with lights that lack cresting and a cupola that has a round window.
The central bays are defined by paired Tuscan three-quarter columns on plinths, with round-headed windows that have console-keystones. The end bay is flanked by rusticated pilasters and features small-paned casements. The interior has been altered, but the building remains a notable example of its style and is an important feature of both George Street and Market Street, contributing to the overall character of the area alongside the Town Hall.
