Description
The Statue of Ethelfleda, located approximately 13.5 meters east of Holloway Lodge, was erected in 1913. It is made of ashlar stone and features a granite base. The statue stands on a circular base that is designed as a seat on an octagonal step. A short pier, which has an inscribed plinth with entasis and a spiral pattern, supports the statue. The roll-moulded base and the Anglo-Saxon interlace at the capital enhance its design. The statue depicts Ethelfleda, dressed in Anglo-Saxon attire, holding a sword and a child. An inscription on the statue commemorates the raising of the castle mound by Ethelfleda in 913. Ethelfleda, known as 'The Lady of the Mercians', was the daughter of Alfred the Great and the sister of Edmund the Elder. She played a significant role in defending Mercia against the Danes and fortifying Tamworth and other towns.
