Description
A house, built around 1810, now converted into flats. It is constructed of ashlar stone with a hipped slate roof and ashlar stacks, and includes a brick rear wing. The house is in a layout resembling an ‘L’ and is designed in a Classical Revival style. The main façade has two storeys and three bays, with the central bay projecting forward under a triangular pediment. A decorative band runs above the ground floor, and the top of the walls has a cornice and blocking course. The front entrance is within a bowed porch with a Tuscan-style surround and double doors with a panel above, flanked by windows. The windows are 12-pane sashes, one with horns. There are two prominent stacks on either side of the front, featuring cornices and small gables. The left side of the house has three bays, with one window blocked. The right side has seven bays, the central three forming a full-height bow with an ashlar dome containing 15-pane sashes, some with iron grilles, and evidence of a former verandah with a curved roof. The rear of the house has varied stacks and windows with flat brick arches. A two-storey painted brick rear wing, now divided into four houses, has mid-19th century windows, largely with 20th century top-hung casements. Inside, the entrance hall features panelled pillars leading to the porch and early 19th century or earlier stained glass in the windows, mostly depicting coats of arms. The entablature has a decorative frieze with goat crests between the triglyphs. The round-headed inner entrance has a fanlight with decorative glazing bars. The cantilever staircase has an iron balustrade with a lattice pattern, and a decorative cornice above the stairwell with a scroll design. Some rooms have cornices and fireplaces.
