Description

The fountain, terrace walls, steps, lions, urns, and sundial are located approximately 27 metres south of The Orangery and date from the early 19th century. Constructed from ashlar, the structure features two terrace walls, each about 46 metres long. The northern wall is bowed towards the south on both sides of a central recess that contains a fountain designed as a staircase with a solid balustrade leading up to the terrace wall. The ends of this wall are scrolled and topped with a pair of busts, while three urns decorate the steps. The central fountain head has a scalloped shell motif above a shelf with antefixae. The southern wall is topped with six urns and has roughly central steps flanked by a pair of crouching lions. Between the two walls stands a central sundial with a square plan stepped base, a bulbous pedestal with a moulded neck, and a square oversailing cap that holds a copper gnomon. This feature is part of the significant garden layout at Alton Towers, which is included in the Grade I listing on the Historic England Gardens Register, and is noted for its group value.
