Description
The retaining wall of the dam on the south-east side of the Boating Lake was built around 1820, likely designed by J.B. Papworth. Constructed from ashlar stone, the wall resembles a bridge and is designed in a nominal Tudor Gothic style. It features nine bays, with seven 4-centred arches and two blind end bays. The wall also has an openwork parapet with octagonal piers at each bay division. This structure is an important part of the garden layout at Alton Towers, which is recognized as Grade I on the Historic Buildings and Monuments Commission Gardens Register.
