Description
Tofthall is a farmhouse dating from the 17th century, with alterations made in the 18th century and further modifications and additions in the mid-19th century. The building is constructed of coursed stone and features a stone slate roof, with verge parapets supported by moulded and carved kneelers, and corniced side and end stacks.
The farmhouse has an irregular plan that includes a hall range, a large parlour cross wing, and a rear wing, and it stands two storeys high with an attic. The entrance front is divided into two parts; to the right is a gable featuring two ranges of glazing bar sashes within block surrounds, topped by a labelled three-light chamfer mullion window with lattice casements at the apex, which has a finial. There are traces of former mullion windows on either side of the sashes. The central section, which is set back, has three ranges of block surround sashes, with the ground floor now featuring casements. The right-hand range has a boarded door in place of a window, and there is a centrally positioned four-light chamfer mullion window directly above the first-floor windows.
To the left, there is a lower mid-19th century wing with two ranges of casement windows that is attached and set back. The garden front displays two projecting gables flanking a central recessed range, which has a similar pattern of 18th-century refenestration, showing evidence of former broad, low mullion windows on both the ground and first floors. The earlier windows have been retained in the attics, with three lights on the left and paired single lights on the right gable.
