Description
Dane Feeder Cottage is a cottage built in 1825 or earlier, featuring squared coursed tooled sandstone and a grey clay-tile roof. The original part of the cottage is made of red stone and has two storeys with two windows. To the right, there is a 19th-century two-storey extension with one window, constructed of yellow stone. The cottage has a gable chimney on the left and a ridge chimney at the right end of the original section, both made of stone with projecting caps and drip-stones. The original portion has small casement windows with two single-pane lights, while the extension has a small-pane window on the lower storey and a window with two single-pane lights and leaded glazing on the upper storey. The boarded door has been renewed in the late 20th century.
This cottage was built to accommodate an employee of the Trent and Mersey Canal Company, who was responsible for maintaining the feeder-channel to Rudyard Lake, which was created in 1802 as a reservoir for the Trent and Mersey canal system via the Leek Branch. In 1823, Thomas Telford was commissioned to enhance the Dane feeder.
