Description

The Church of St Werburgh is a parish church located in Kingsley, with its origins dating back to the 13th century for the base and a 14th-century tower. The nave was designed by Trubshaw in 1820, and the chancel was added by Lynham in 1886. The church is constructed from coursed dressed and squared stone of ashlar quality, with the chancel being rough-faced. The nave features a slate roof, while the chancel has a tiled roof, both with verge parapets.

The structure includes a tower, nave (with a south porch), and chancel. The tower consists of four stages, with large diagonal buttresses on the west sides and a crenellated parapet on a raised string that supports gargoyles at the centers. The bell chamber has pointed openings with two lights and trefoils above, while the lower stages have small lancets and a flat-headed two-light mullioned west window above a Tudor-arch door.

The nave has a wide plan that extends beyond the tower to the north and is divided into four bays by two-stage buttresses. It features cavetto eaves and pointed windows with Y-tracery. The south porch has a flat roof behind a parapet, angle buttresses, and a pointed arch entry. The north door is adorned with a brattished cornice set between buttresses.

The chancel consists of three bays, with the eastern bay being larger, and is divided by gabletted two-stage buttresses. It has Y-tracery windows in the west and center bays on the south side, and a five-light pointed east window with a low-relief carved panel below. A vestry is set against the north side of the chancel.
