Description
The Church School and School House of St. Chad, built in 1846 by Scott and Moffat, features coursed dressed and squared white sandstone with a steeply pitched banded tiled roof and ridge stacks. The building has a cruciform plan for the school, with the School House attached to the north-east limb. The school has a slightly taller ridge on the north-east side, with a south-west front that includes a lower projecting gabled wing at the center of the lane. This wing has 1-, 2-, 1- and 1-, 2-light trefoil-headed lancets on either side of the gable, which is partially obscured by a 20th-century porch containing the entrance. The gable is illuminated by a large 3-light mullioned and transomed window, and a lead-covered bellcote with herringbone joints and a timber frame marks the central intersection of the roofs.
The School House, attached at the rear, has been extended with a limb that faces the lane, featuring a projecting gable and a massive triple-shafted, corniced ridge stack set back at the center. The gable includes two ranges of Caernarvon-headed windows, with two-light windows on the first floor and 3-light windows on the ground floor. A Tudor arch entrance is set back to the right against the return angle, with a further Tudor arch entrance to the left of the gable set in a pent roof addition. The School and School House are attractively situated close to the Church of St. Chad. A description of the building is displayed in the church.
