Description

The boundary stone, dated 1855, is located on Macclesfield Road in Leek. Made of stone, it is inscribed with 'LIA 1855 L.B.' and marks the outer limit of the administrative area established by the Leek Improvement Act of 1855. This act created a commission with the authority to implement improvements in the town, including the establishment of markets, a cemetery, and the management of water works. It signified the beginning of municipal government in Leek. The boundaries of the town were defined as a circle centered in the Market Place, and wherever this circular line intersected rights of way and watercourses, boundary stones like this one were erected, with several still remaining.
