Boundary stone of uncertain date, perhaps C16. Monolith 5 feet x 12" x 9". Slightly tapers. Roughly dressed. West face bears the date " 1779 ", deeply incised. Marks the Ancient Boundary between Midgley and Wadsworth Townships, as determined in 1594 after a dispute between the respective lords of the manor (Sir George Savile and John Lacy), see Churn Milk Joan. The date of 1779 was cut following a beating of the bounds by Mr. William Shackleton and his pupils at Heptonstall Grammar School, Churchyard Bottom (q.v.).
