Description

Greenwood Stone is a boundary stone of uncertain date, possibly from the 16th century. It is a monolith measuring 5 feet tall, 12 inches wide, and 9 inches deep, and it slightly tapers. The stone is roughly dressed, and the west face features the deeply incised date "1779". This stone marks the ancient boundary between Midgley and Wadsworth Townships, which was established in 1594 after a dispute between the lords of the manor, Sir George Savile and John Lacy. The date of 1779 was carved following a beating of the bounds by Mr. William Shackleton and his pupils at Heptonstall Grammar School, Churchyard Bottom.
