Description

Far Nook is an unoccupied house located in Old Town, Wadsworth, and dates from the early 17th century. It features a stone encasing of an earlier timber-framed building, a large porch added in the early 18th century, and a contemporary cell added to the east end of the house. The structure is built of large dressed stone and thin coursed rubble for the additions, topped with a stone slate roof.

The house has a three-room plan with a direct entry. It includes chamfered mullioned windows, most of which lack their mullions. The service end has a four-light window at a lower level, with a three-light window above that has a lowered sill. The parlour features a six-light window with a three-light window above on the first floor. The porch has a two-light window and a doorway with a segmental arch that covers the original doorway, which has a broad chamfered surround. The first floor of the porch has a two-light flat faced mullioned window, while the main house has a three-light window with a cavetto surround and mullions, a doorway with monolithic jambs and a heavy lintel, and a five-light window.

At the rear, there are two two-light windows, a three-light window, and a six-light window with two king mullions in the housebody, along with a six-light flat faced mullioned window. The roof has three stacks along the ridge and one additional stack.

Inside, the housebody features a segmental arched fireplace with a cyma moulded surround, reeded spine beams, and floor joists. Remnants of the earlier building include a post and truss with a shortened king post and angle struts, and the soffit of the tie-beam shows mortice holes for close studding.
