Description
No. 1, 3 and 5 Upper Needless is a former meeting house and day school associated with the General Baptist movement, now converted into dwellings. It dates from the mid-18th century and is constructed of thin coursed stone with ashlar quoins and a stone slate roof. The building features three-storey gable fronts facing the road.
A wide gabled porch includes a doorway with tie-stone jambs and an arched window with a chamfered surround. Above the porch apex is a former two-light window, with another window located on the second floor. An inscribed plaque on the building reads: "ORIGINAL MEETING HOUSE OF BIRCHCLIFFE BAPTIST CHURCH, FOUNDED BY REV DAN TAYLOR, & OTHERS, A.D.1763."
The left-hand return wall shows evidence of a former outside stair that led to a first-floor door entry, which is now blocked and converted into a window. The right-hand return wall features a five-light chamfered mullioned window, with a similar window above it on the first and second floors, both missing two mullions. There is a gable stack and another stack on the ridge.
At the rear, there is an attached two-storey building with a lower roofline, featuring paired doorways with chamfered surrounds and former six-light chamfered mullioned windows on either side. Above the doorways is a dated plaque inscribed "L J H Harwood 1752." The rear building has a coped gable with kneelers and a stack.
Inside the three-storey house, there are removable floorboards at the pulpit end, allowing people on different floors to see the preacher.
