Description

Churn Milk Joan, also known as Savile's Lowe, is a boundary stone of uncertain date, possibly from the 16th century. This monolith stands approximately 7 feet high and measures 15 inches by 11 inches, with a rectangular shape. It is roughly dressed and broader at the base. The stone bears a benchmark and marks the boundary between Wadsworth and Midgley Townships, a division established in 1594 following a dispute between the lords of the manor, Sir George Savile and John Lacy.
