Description
This boundary stone, dated 1855, is made of stone and is inscribed with 'LIA 1855 L.B.' It marks the outer limit of the administrative area established by the Leek Improvement Act of 1855. This act created a commission with the authority to implement improvements in the town, including the establishment of markets, a cemetery, and the management of waterworks. It signifies the beginning of municipal government in Leek. The boundaries of the town were defined as a circle centered in the Market Place, and wherever this circular line intersected rights of way and watercourses, boundary stones like this one were erected, several of which still remain.
