Description
The west tunnel entrance on the Leek arm of the Caldon Canal was built in 1801 and designed by engineer John Rennie. It features rock-faced ashlar stonework and has a curved retaining wall with a plain string course and a parapet topped with curved copings. The entrance is marked by terminal piers and a parabolic arch. Above the arch, there is a plaque in a classical cartouche, although the inscription has eroded over time.
