Description

The Caldon Canal tunnel entrance screen, located at SJ 974 543, was built in 1801 and designed by engineer John Rennie. It features a rock-faced ashlar-like rubble construction with a slightly concave retaining wall that includes end piers and a parapet. The central tunnel entrance is elliptically arched and set low, with a pilastered plaque above it, although the inscription is now lost.
