Description
This chapel, dating from approximately 1895 to 1899, was originally built as part of the North Staffordshire Asylum, now known as St Edward's Hospital. Designed by Giles, Gough and Trollope, it is constructed of red brick with sandstone dressings. The roof is slate, pitched and with a lower chancel, topped with a pinnacled bellcote at the south end. The building comprises a 7-bay aisleless nave and a 4-bay chancel. It is designed in the Decorated style. The east end features a 4-light window, while the west end has a 5-light window. The nave windows alternate between 2-light and 3-light designs, separated by buttresses. A single-story entrance vestibule is situated beneath the west window, with square-headed, traceried windows extending under a continuous hoodmould. Angle buttresses flank the entrance, culminating in conical roofed pinnacles. Internally, the nave has a hammer-beam king post roof, and the chancel a king post roof. The walls are plain rendered with stone dressings, and there is a patterned tile floor. The chapel's original fixtures and fittings have been removed.
