Description
The bridge at SJ 969 528 is an accommodation bridge built in the early 19th century. It is constructed from coursed dressed and squared stone, featuring rounded copings. The bridge has an elliptical arch that includes the towpath, with a string course at carriageway level. The parapets and carriageway are cambered over the span and end with piers. This section of the Caldon Canal, which the bridge serves, was opened around 1779 to facilitate the transport of limestone from Caldon Low, designed by engineers Henshaw and John Rennie.
