Description

The building is a former police station, now serving as a public library, constructed in 1858. It features orange brick with ashlar dressings and has a slate roof with a brick ridge stack. The main structure consists of one storey and an attic, with a low set-back wing on the right and a low blind projecting wing on the left.

The main range has a dentilled eaves cornice and is divided into three bays, each with glazing bar sashes that have horns, shaped architraves, bracketed sills, and fluted keys. There is a central attic window with a fluted key and a semi-circular arch that springs from an impost-band. The corners of the building are accentuated by paired pilasters, and there are single pilasters at the corners of the central pedimented porch. The entrance features a central partly glazed two-leaf door with a cornice hood.

The right-hand wing is also one storey, featuring a dentilled eaves cornice beneath a hipped roof. It has two bays, with a two-light flat face mullioned window on the left that has a bracket sill and contains plate glass sashes. To the right, there is a six-panelled door with an overlight, shaped surround, and fluted key. The left-hand wing is one storey as well, with corner pilasters and a hipped roof. The library is located opposite Wyre Hall.
