Description
Awbridge Bridge, also known as Bridge No 49, and its associated lock were built around 1770 as part of the Staffordshire and Worcestershire Canal. The bridge is constructed from red brick and features a stone-coped parapet. It has a single three-centred arch with a perforated parapet above, which is separated from the abutment parapets by pilaster strips topped with pyramidal caps. Underneath the bridge, the towpath is bordered on the left by a coped wall, and at the rear, a short flight of steps leads up to the lock. The canal was opened through Wombourne parish in 1770, designed by engineer James Brindley, and Awbridge Bridge and lock may represent his first effort to integrate a lock and a bridge on a public road.
