Description

Orton House, now a house, was built in the mid-18th century, originally as a farmhouse. It is located on Showell Lane in Lower Penn, and was formerly in Wombourne. The building is constructed of red brick with a plain tile roof displaying stepped verges. The main house has a roughly L-shaped plan, oriented east-west and facing south, with a wing and attached outbuildings to the rear. The house is three stories high, although the second floor has reduced proportions. It features coved eaves. The facade has five bays with casement windows; those on the ground and first floors have wedge-shaped lintels, grooved as voussoirs, and raised keys. A central six-panel door is accompanied by a rectangular overlight and a wooden doorcase with a gabled hood. An insurance plate is visible on the first floor to the left. The right-hand gable has two sets of flight ledges and blocked entrances to a former pigeon loft. The interior includes a newel staircase with a solid balustrade. Attached to the rear wing is a former stable and wash house, dated 1741.
