Description

Bearnett House is a large house built in 1854, designed in the Jacobean style. It features red brick construction with painted stone and plaster quoins and dressings. The roof is covered in fish-scale tiles with plain tile bands and ogee-shaped gables topped with finials. Brick ridge stacks have polygonal shafts.

The east front has two storeys and a moulded eaves cornice, with a symmetrical arrangement of three bays. It includes mullioned and transomed windows with leaded panes and a first-floor moulded sill band. The central gabled break features a loggia porch with three keyed semi-circular arches and a pierced balustrade. Above, there is a bow window with a strapwork parapet and a keyed blind oculus. The central entrance has a half-glazed door flanked by mullioned windows, all topped with keyed fanlights and pilasters.

On the south front, there are also two storeys and a moulded eaves cornice, arranged in a 1:2:1 bay pattern. It has similar mullioned and transomed windows with a first-floor moulded sill band. The central section is recessed, with projecting gabled wings on either side, each featuring a two-storey bay window with strapwork parapets and keyed blind oculi above. There is a set-back single-storey rear wing to the left.

Inside, the house has a central T-shaped staircase with turned balusters and elaborate newel finials. The south front room has floor-to-wall wood panelling, a moulded plaster cornice, and a decorative plaster ceiling with pendants, along with a decorative timber overmantle above the stone fireplace. The central room on the south side features a stone fireplace with a four-centred arch, a dentilled cornice, and a decorative ceiling. The back room on the south side also has floor-to-ceiling wood panelling, a stone fireplace with a four-centred arch and ornamental overmantle, and a decorative plaster ceiling.
