Description

Chorlton Mill is a former mill, now disused, with the ground floor converted for agricultural use. It was rebuilt in 1848, as indicated by the date inscribed on the keystone above the first-floor entrance on the west side, likely on the site of an earlier mill. The building features roughly coursed sandstone blocks and a slate Mansard roof with a flat top. The tower is square in plan and has a lower two-storey gabled projection to the south, along with a later purple brick lean-to above the stream to the east. The mill has three storeys with a loft that is lit by half-dormers on the south and east sides. The north side has chamfered mullion windows, with two 2-light windows on the first floor and one 3-light window on the ground floor. There is an opening for a chute beneath the right-hand first-floor mullion, and the entrance on the west side is under a wide segmental arch, providing access to the first floor above. An ashlar floor band runs all around beneath the loft.

Inside, no machinery remains except for the wheel for the hoist in the loft. The ground and first floor ceilings are supported by heavy beams resting on plain stone corbels. To the north of the brick lean-to, there is a small twin-arched bridge made of both brick and stone. The late 19th-century millhouse, known as Rose Cottage, which is adjacent to the mill on the west, is not of special interest and is not included in the listing. The mill is in a poor state of repair due to neglect, as noted during the re-survey in 1984.
