Description
The Former Cock Inn is a house that dates back to the late 17th century. It was extended at the rear in the early to mid-18th century and further extended and remodeled as an inn in the late 19th century. The building features a timber frame and coursed sandstone, with late 19th-century stretcher bond brick cladding at the rear and a mock timber frame at the front. The early 18th-century rear wing is made of brick. It has gabled roofs covered with plain tiles and brick stacks. The structure has a three-unit plan with 19th-century extensions at both ends and an 18th-century rear wing. It stands two storeys tall and has a five-window front with timber casements and a central doorway facing the road.
Inside, the building showcases an exposed timber frame with jowled wall posts, wall framing, and a queen-post roof structure featuring trenched purlins. The first floor includes chamfered beams, plain joists, and a very fine chimneypiece with a cyma-moulded mantle and a plain chamfered surround around the fireplace. There is also a later chimneypiece below, likely from the early 18th century, which has a keyed segmental arch over the fireplace. The ground floor features exposed chamfered beams and a stone end wall with a chamfered pointed-arched doorway.
