Description

A pair of estate cottages dating to 1879, designed by Robert Griffiths for Thomas Fletcher Twemlow. The cottages are constructed of red brick with blue brick and ashlar dressings, featuring steep-pitched gabled and hipped plain tile roofs. Prominent side wall and ridge stacks are present, topped with diagonally-set coped square flues. The detailing includes a plinth, flush brick quoins, a first-floor band, and dentillated eaves. Original wooden casement and sash windows are largely intact.

The front elevation has a central three-light cross casement window, with a gabled through-eaves dormer above containing a two-light casement. To the left is a hipped bay with a recessed door flanked by cross casements on the ground floor, and three two-light casements above. To the right, a slightly projecting gabled bay features a three-light cross casement window below a two-light casement, and a datestone inscribed "TFT 1879" in the gable. A recessed doorway is set within a setback bay to the right. The left return exhibits a hooded porch with a half-glazed door, flanked by a buttress and side wall stack; a two-light casement sits above. The right return has a single sash window on the ground floor and two sashes on the first floor.

The rear elevation features a projecting gabled bay to the right. A three-light cross casement window is centrally placed, flanked by a door and a cross casement on each side; these are now partially obscured by late 20th-century conservatories. A large gabled through-eaves dormer with four lights divided by brick mullions is located above to the left, while a two-light casement is positioned to the right.

The interiors of both cottages retain original features. Abrahams House has cornices to principal rooms, original four-panel doors, an original stone fireplace with a mantel shelf supported by brackets and a register grate, an Adam-style fireplace that appears to be a later insertion, a straight staircase with stick balusters, and a landing. Rose View also features cornices to principal rooms and some original four-panel doors. It includes a corner fireplace on the ground floor, and an original grate in a similar fireplace on the first floor. The cottages have winder staircases with stick balusters, and retain their original layout.

Externally, a chamfered blue brick plinth extends across the full frontage, returning at the right end. Two pairs of square brick gate piers are topped with pyramidal stone caps. A similar single pier is located to the left.
