Description
14, 15, and 16 Ironmarket are a row of three shops located in Newcastle under Lyme, built in the mid-18th century, possibly incorporating earlier structures. The buildings are constructed of brick and topped with plain tiled roofs. Each shop has three storeys and a two-window range, though the ground floors have been renewed with 20th-century shop fronts.
Shop 14 features tall three-light casement windows with transoms and flat arched heads on the first floor, and horizontal three-light casement windows above. It has a heavy moulded eaves cornice, coped gables with moulded kneelers, and a gable end stack. Shop 15 has 12-pane sash windows with stuccoed heads and stressed key blocks on the first floor, and six-pane sash windows above, which have flat arched gauged brick heads and a continuous sill band. It also has a moulded eaves cornice, a coped gable, and an end wall stack. Shop 16 is similar to 15, featuring sash windows with stuccoed heads on the first floor and flat-arched brick heads on the second floor, with first floor two-pane sashes and a sill band on the second storey. It has a moulded eaves cornice and end wall stacks.
