Description

Shade House is a house from the mid to late 18th century, with alterations and additions from the late 19th and 20th centuries. It is built of red brick and features plain tile roofs, with a central coped ridge stack. The house has three storeys and is arranged in a single range with three bays. The front gable includes a late 18th-century canted bay window with bowed glazing bar lights. Above this, there are three-light glazing bar casements on each floor. To the right, there is a single-storey hipped porch with a recessed door. The right side of the house has a central late 18th-century canted bay window with glazing bar lights, above which is a two-light glazing bar window and a three-light iron-framed casement with leaded glazing, both with segmental heads. Above these, there is a strip casement with three lights and glazing bars, along with a single-storey hipped projection that has two renewed segmental-headed windows. The rear gable features a close boarded door and three-light iron-framed casements with leaded glazing and segmental heads on each floor.

Inside, the ground floor has plain span beams and 18th-century six-panel doors leading to the principal rooms. The central room contains a mid-19th-century stone fireplace with brackets, while the kitchen at the rear has boxed span beams and a 19th-century cast iron fireplace. There is a central dogleg staircase with a moulded oak handrail and pine stick balusters, although the lower flight has been renewed. The upper floors feature several four-panel doors from the 18th and 19th centuries, along with various fireplaces from the late 18th and 19th centuries.

The exterior includes a chamfered blue brick plinth, which was formerly topped with railing, running across the front of the house and returning on the right side. There are a pair of square brick gate piers with pyramidal caps, and a similar taller pier is located next to the porch.
