Description

The Church of St. Bartholomew is a parish church that dates back to around 1300, although it was largely rebuilt in the mid-18th century and restored in the mid-19th century. The church consists of a chancel, nave, and a west tower with a south porch. It is constructed from stone and red brick, featuring tiled roofs with verge parapets on the east side.

The tower, built in 1747, is made of brick and is only slightly taller than the ridge of the nave. It has a raised string course below a plain corniced parapet and small round-arch openings for the bell chamber. The gabled south porch has a round arch entrance. The nave, constructed in 1740 from brick, has a corbelled eaves band and pilasters at its ends. It is divided into two bays, with round arch Y-tracery windows that have keystone heads.

The chancel has one bay and shares a continuous ridge with the nave. It features 15th-century panel tracery two-light flat-headed windows on the sides and a three-light pointed east window with intersecting tracery. Inside, the nave roof is of the late 19th-century crown post type. The pulpit is a 20th-century octagonal design with carved linenfold panels. There is a simple font on a stand inscribed "A. A. MINN/IR CH WAR/1703" and two ranges of misericords from around 1300 located in the chancel. The church is designated as Grade II* for its surviving medieval fabric and fittings.
