Description
The John Smith Statue, located in Museum Gardens, is a Grade II listed monument commemorating Captain John Smith, the commander of the RMS Titanic, who perished with his ship in 1912. Created by Lady Kathleen Scott in 1914, the statue features a bronze figure of Captain Smith, depicted in an overcoat and cap with his arms folded, standing on a granite base. The plain plinth includes a plaque at the front with lettering and an inscription above. The Titanic disaster resulted in the loss of 1,513 lives, making it one of the greatest maritime tragedies. Captain Smith was originally from Staffordshire.
