Description
The Causeway Bridge, located at the end of Minster Pool in Lichfield, dates back to around 1300 and was later modified in 1816 by Joseph Potter Snr, the County Surveyor. This bridge is constructed from ashlar and cast iron and features three elliptical arches, with the outer arches being blind. It has pointed cutwaters, roll moulding, and a low parapet topped with iron railings. At each end, there are four openwork boxes with lamp standards that resemble the railings found at the Shire Hall in Stafford. The bridge incorporates the medieval causeway beneath its surface. Originally, this causeway bridge carried the main road from London to Chester over the junction of the drained Bishop's Fish Pool and Minster Pool. There is no water on the southwest side of the bridge.
