Description

The building is a barn and stables located immediately northeast of Newlands Farmhouse, dating from the early 18th century. It is constructed of red brick and features a plain tile roof with raised verges. The structure has an L-shaped plan, with a four-bay barn aligned northwest to southeast facing southwest, and stables to the northwest aligned northeast to southwest facing southeast. The barn is positioned to the right, while the stables project forward at right angles to the left.

The barn includes full-height doors to the left of center, with two tiers of ventilation loops on each side, and a door with a segmental head to the right. The stables are two storeys high, featuring segmental-headed doors on both the right and left, with the left door flanked by a pair of segmental-headed windows. There is an inserted cart entrance in the center, which largely obscures an earlier segmental-headed doorway. Additionally, there are two loft hatches, and the right-hand gable of the barn has a ground floor segmental-headed door, a square loft opening, and pigeon holes above.

Inside, the barn has timber cross-frames with long curved tension braces flanking the threshing floor bay. The roof features collar and tie beam trusses with raking struts extending from the beam to the principal rafters, which support two pairs of purlins. The stables have chamfered ceiling beams. The building is included for its group value.
