Description
The Church of St John is a parish church built in 1839 by Scott and Moffat. It is constructed from pale yellow chisel-finished sandstone and features tiled roofs with corbelled eaves and verge parapets. The church consists of a west steeple, nave, and chancel.
The steeple is a square tower with approximately three stages, standing on a plinth and supported by two-stage diagonal buttresses. The last stage is chamfered to create an octagonal base for the short spire. It has a single stage of small lucarnes and a small slit trefoil-headed window above the pointed west door.
The nave, which is four bays long and built on a plinth, is divided by two-stage buttresses and has two-light, square-headed trefoil-light windows in each bay. The chancel is lower than the nave and has similar details, consisting of one short bay with a three-light, labelled pointed window in the Perpendicular style featuring panel tracery.
Inside, the nave has a plain-finished plastered interior with a single hammer beam and arch-braced roof, double purlins, and exposed rafters. There is a narrow, pointed chancel arch. Notable interior features include a reading desk with fretted brasswork and an octagonal stone font on a stand. The church is attractively situated at the top of a rise, making it a prominent feature in the landscape.
