Description
Gaskell's Bridge Number 46 is a canal road bridge located on Church Road, built in the late 18th century. It is constructed of red brick with stone coping and features a single span with a humped back and a towpath. The bridge has a segmental headed arch with swept wings that end in piers at all four corners, and it includes stone springing stones. A stone plaque is situated at the crown on the south elevation. The bridge appears to have been built in two sections or widened at an early stage, and it has undergone minor repairs, particularly on the north side and the jambs. The Trent and Mersey Canal, for which this bridge was built, was constructed between 1766 and 1777 by James Brindley and Hugh Henshall.
