Description

49 and 49A Tamworth Street is a house that has been converted into a shop and flat. It dates from the mid to late 17th century and has undergone some alterations over the years. The building is constructed of brick with a stuccoed facade and features internal timber-framing. It has a tiled roof with a brick chimney located at the rear of the ridge.

The structure is two storeys high with an attic and has a three-window range. There are two stucco platt bands on the facade. The entrance features an architrave and a bracketed pediment, leading to a half-glazed door. To the right of the entrance, there is a round-headed entry with a glazed door and a recessed six-flush-panel door. On the ground floor, there is a large bow window on the left, which is adorned with panelled pilasters, a frieze, and a cornice, along with small-paned glazing. To the right, there is a fixed plate-glass window. The first floor has windows with sills and 16-pane sashes, flanking a blind window. The attic includes three gabled dormers with two-light small-paned casements.

At the rear, the building features three gables with exposed timber framing, two pegged cross-casements, and two stair windows with two lights, all pegged. Some of the attic casements have iron opening casements.

Inside, the ground floor has chamfered beams, while the first floor features ovolo-moulded beams and doors made of three wide planks. The first-floor staircase has turned balusters, square newels with ball finials, and a moulded handrail. The attic retains some exposed timber-framing. Notably, No.49A was listed separately on March 6, 1970.
