Description

Mayfield Cottage is a house from the early 19th century, constructed of ashlar with a slate roof and engineering brick end stacks. The building has an L-shaped plan, featuring a two-room range at the front and an extension at the rear. It stands two storeys high and has three windows, which are glazing bar sashes with shaped and painted lintels and painted surrounds. The outer windows are tripartite, with colonettes acting as mullions, complete with moulded bases and caps. The central porch is made of cast-iron trellis-work and has glazed doors beneath a low-pitch gabled roof, which replaced a high concave-sided roof; the outline of the former roof is still visible on the wall above. The entrance features a half-glazed door with lead lattice-work. Inside, there is an early 19th-century open well staircase with a wooden handrail and a decorative cast-iron balustrade that includes fleurons. The front rooms have panelled window shutters. To the right side of the cottage, a side wall and a dwarf wall with decorative cast-iron railings and a gate partially enclose a small front garden.
