Description

Banks Farmhouse is an early 18th-century farmhouse constructed of red brick with a hipped clay tile roof. It features a brick integral end stack and a ridge stack, and has an L-shaped plan with five sides of an octagonal tower projecting from the outer corner to the south. The architectural style is Provincial Baroque with early castellated details and mannered brickwork.

On the southwest elevation, the building stands two storeys above a high basement. To the left, there is a pilaster strip with stone insets serving as caps for each floor. The three-storey crenellated tower, also on a basement, has a first-floor band and a boldly moulded eaves cornice that continues and breaks around the tower. The elevation has two bays, with the right bay being the tower, which features windows on each face, most of which are blind. The segmental-headed casements have panelled aprons, while the left-hand windows exhibit mannered rustication and surrounds, slightly breaking the eaves cornice. This break is emphasized by stone 'caps' above each window jamb, creating an effective rusticated pilaster strip. The tower's windows are wider and are distinguished by a sill band on each floor, simply moulded architraves, and boldly projecting triple keystones. There is a blocked oval oculus at the centre of the second floor of the tower, which also has a basement door to the left.

Inside, the farmhouse features an open well staircase with turned balusters, two fireplaces in the tower with raised keys, and two pairs of upper crucks, one of which is elbowed. The farmhouse is situated on the edge of a hill overlooking the Dove Valley.
