Description

This non-conformist chapel was built in 1841. It is constructed from carefully squared and dressed large stone blocks, with a low-pitched slate roof. The design incorporates both Neo-Tudor and Classical architectural elements. The central porch is stuccoed and features Tuscan pilasters supporting a cambered lintel. The door is studded with iron and has an inscribed scroll above reading "TAKE FAST HOLD OF INSTRUCTION." Above the door is a recessed panel inscribed "STUBWOOD METHODIST / CHAPEL / AND / SUNDAY SCHOOL / A.D. 1841". There is a two-light chamfer mullioned window to each side of the porch, with rebated surrounds, returned hood moulds, and latticed lights with frosted glass. A banded and shaped eaves course runs around the building. The side walls, low front walls, and square gate piers, along with cast iron railings and a gate featuring spearheads and urn finials, enclose a small forecourt. A low, lean-to extension to the left has a door and a corrugated iron roof.
