Description

Denstone College Chapel is a school chapel built between 1879 and 1887 by Carpenter and Ingelow. It is constructed from coursed and squared rough-faced stone with ashlar dressings and features a hipped clay tile roof with crested ridge tiles. The chapel forms the east wing of Denstone College and has a four-bay nave, a polygonal apse, and flanking towers. Each division of the nave and each angle of the apse is marked by a buttress, reflecting a late 13th-century Gothic style. The nave contains pointed windows with three lights and Geometrical style tracery featuring three cusped circles above. The towers have elongated lancet windows, while the chancel has tall, slim pointed windows with two lights and a traceried circle above. All windows are linked at sill level by a string course.

Inside, the chapel features a very tall pointed chancel arch with smaller pointed arches on each side, a segmental west arch, and an organ gallery above with wooden cusped open work panelling. The roof is supported by a king post and scissor truss design, complete with a tie beam, collar, and cusped bracing. The chancel roof has plain rib vaulting that springs from plain clustered columns with moulded capitals. Stained glass can be found in the chancel windows, the westernmost north window, and the central south window.

The fittings include low wooden pews and choir stalls arranged parallel to the north and south walls, with panelling at the rear topped by a bracketed crenellated canopy. There are two western pews; the one to the north of the west arch has an inscribed brass plaque commemorating the Rev. H. Meynell M.A., the first Provost, for his contributions to the foundation of the school and the building of the chapel, which was dedicated on July 27, 1887.
