Description
Milepost opposite Stone Bank is a 19th-century milepost made of hollow cast iron, featuring a triangular shape with a sloping top. It is painted white with raised black lettering. The inscriptions on the milepost indicate distances: on the left side, it reads "DENSTONE ½", "ELLASTONE 2 ¼", and "ASHBOURNE 7"; on the right side, it states "ALTON 2" and "CHEADLE 6". The top of the milepost is inscribed with "DENSTONE PARISH". This milepost is well-preserved in its original location and is part of a group of similar structures, many of which are listed, that mark routes in East Staffordshire. It serves as a reminder of the increasing significance of road transport in the 19th century and is a notable example of a milepost in situ, warranting its listing.
