4/25 Denstone College Hall

GV II

School hall. 1888-91. Coursed and squared rough faced stone with ashlar dressings; clay tile roof with coped verges and crested ridge tiles. Forms the north wing of Denstone College (q.v.); Gothic style. 2 storeys; 5 bays each defined by full height gabled buttresses, each ground floor bay has 2 lancets separated by small central buttress, except left hand bay which has 2 lancets separated by a segmental headed doorway with 2-leaf board door and hood mould terminating in a wreath; the gabled first floor windows are transomed triple lancets each with 2 cusped circles over; recessed panel behind gable of each buttress with corbelled moulded head, and gargoyle rainwater head to drain-pipes. NE gable: 2 pairs of central ground floor lancets with common relieving arch and moulded string course stepped up over the windows; central panel over with 4 leaf motifs and the inscription "LIGNUM: CRUCIS: ARBOR: SCIENTIAE", moulded string course over; a further stepped string course at eaves level and another stepped up above the gable window which has 5 trefoil headed lights with Geometri- cal style tracery over, blind central light used as a niche for a statuette of a bishop.
