Description

The Uttoxeter War Memorial, built around 1928, is a town memorial located in the Market Square of Uttoxeter. Constructed from Hollington stone ashlar, it has an octagonal shape and is designed in a Perpendicular gothic style, resembling a medieval Eleanor Cross.

The memorial consists of four main stages, which rest on a four-stepped base. Each of the upper stages is supported by eight buttresses, which are topped with decorative finials featuring carved crockets. The central stage includes linenfold panelling in the reveals, with carved tracery above it. The upper stage also displays carved tracery panels that contain bronze grilles, and the entire structure is topped with a carved stone cross.

Originally, bronze plaques commemorating the fallen from the First World War were set into the stone of the second stage, inscribed with the words: "TO THE GLORIOUS MEMORY/ OF THE MEN OF UTTOXETER/ WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES/ IN THE GREAT WAR/ 1914 - 1918". After 1945, additional plaques were added to honor those lost in the Second World War, inscribed: "TO THE GLORIOUS/ MEMORY OF THE MEN/ OF UTTOXETER WHO/ GAVE THEIR LIVES IN/ THE WORLD WAR/ 1939 - 1945", with a Greek Cross below.

Further plaques were added after the Gulf War and the conflict in Afghanistan, including one honoring Sergeant Michael Dowling, killed in the Gulf War on February 26, 1991, and another for LCpl Barry Buxton, who served in Afghanistan on May 3, 2010.

The stepped base is currently obscured by modern timber boarding that has been used to create planters, and the monument is enclosed by a series of modern metal bollards.
