Description
The Conduit or Market Cross, built in 1756, is a Grade II listed structure located in the Market Place. This early 19th-century building is made of freestone and designed in a classical style. It has a cube shape with identical faces, each featuring an arched recess under a dentilled pediment supported by pilasters. The entire structure is topped with a dome on a square plinth, which is further adorned with a 19th-century cast iron lamp bracket. On the west side, there is a bas-relief depicting Dr. Johnson doing penance in the Market Place. This relief resembles those created by Lucas for the Johnson memorial statue in Lichfield but was likely added in the late 19th century.
