Description
The building is a former stable located approximately 30 yards north of Mayfield House. It dates from the early 19th century and has undergone some alterations in the 20th century. The structure is built of ashlar stone with chamfered quoins and features a flat felted roof and a brick integral end stack. Designed in the Gothic style, it is a single storey with five bays. Each side has two lancet windows flanking a central pointed doorway that has chamfered jambs and voussoirs.
On the south gable, there is a pointed doorway to the left with chamfered jambs and voussoirs, featuring a unicorn motif between the arch and the door, and a pointed window to the right. The north gable includes tallet steps to the left leading to a former loft door, of which the lower half remains, also with chamfered jambs. There is a blocked pointed doorway with chamfered jambs and voussoirs to the right on the ground floor.
Inside, there are three wooden stalls in the center, flanked by balustraded loose boxes, one of which has a sliding door, and a saddle room to the north. The former loft and slate roof were removed in the late 20th century. The building is included partly for its group value.
