Description
Needwood House is a small country house built in the early 19th century, with additions from the mid-19th century and alterations in the 20th century. The house features stuccoed brickwork and a low-pitched hipped slate roof with broad eaves. It has stuccoed and corniced ridge stacks and an approximately L-shaped original plan, which has been expanded with extensive later additions.
On the garden front, the house has a two-storey facade with a 3:2:3 window arrangement, featuring glazing bar sashes in a moulded surround. The glazing bars have been removed from the ground floor, and one window has been converted to a French casement. There are segmental-fronted bays that extend to the roofline, set against projecting wings flanking a central recess with a double string course between the storeys. To the right, there is a lower set-back wing.
The entrance front includes a projecting wing to the right, which features a stone flat-roofed Tuscan porch positioned at the angle against the return. To the left, two bays accommodate three storeys within the eaves height of the main house, while an extensive lower service wing projects to the left. Needwood House is one of several houses built by the Bass family, who were brewers in Burton-on-Trent.
