Description

Birdsgrove House is a house that has been converted into a rest-home, dated 1852. It is built of ashlar stone and features a slate roof with ashlar ridge stacks that have octagonal section shafts. The house is designed in the Tudor-Gothic style and consists of two storeys and an attic, with a coved eaves course. The façade has a 1:2:1 bay arrangement, with a recessed central range that is screened by a ground floor loggia consisting of three 4-centred arches, the central arch being wider. This loggia connects two flanking gabled wings, which have coped verges on shaped kneelers and apex finials. The left wing projects further than the right. Each wing has a two-storey, three-sided angled bay window topped with crenellated parapets, and the windows are mullioned and transomed, containing plate glass sashes. The attic windows in each wing are simply mullioned with two lights, while the angled bay windows and the first-floor windows of the central range feature 4-centred heads and panelled spandrels. The ground floor and attic windows of the central range have straight heads, and the angled bay windows have a 1:4:1 vertical light arrangement with a single transom. Most central range windows have two vertical lights and a single transom, except for an additional first-floor window on the left, which has one vertical light. The central entrance features a 4-centred doorway with panelled spandrels and a stepped hood mould above a coat of arms and the date. There are also two gabled dormers on the central range, which have painted barge boards and finials. Inside, the entrance hall includes a marble fireplace with a segmental pointed arch, and a three-bay arcade with bead and reel moulding that screens an open well staircase with turned balusters and shaped tread ends. The front room to the east features a stone fireplace with a Tudor arch.
