Description

Church House is a house dated 1619, which was restored in the mid-20th century by F.W.B Charles. It features a timber frame on a brick plinth, with some brick replacement, and has plain tile roofs along with a brick ridge stack and an integral brick end stack.

The building has a roughly L-shaped plan, consisting of a two-bay crosswing and a two-bay hall range. The gabled crosswing to the left has two storeys and an attic, with bracketed jetties. To the left of the centre is a slightly lower gabled bay, also with two storeys and an attic, while the hall range to the right is one storey with an attic. The front has four windows, featuring 20th-century mullioned windows; the ground floor and first floor windows of the wing are tripartite, and the central window of the latter is bracketed. There are two gabled dormers to the right with 20th-century top-hung casements, and doors are located to the right and left of centre.

The framing mainly consists of close studding, interrupted by middle rails, with straight tension braces on the upper floor of the east elevation. The upper floors of the gabled fronts are decorated with lozenges, parallel struts, and wavy struts.

The restoration has emphasized the significance and interest of this substantial town house.
