Description
The Church of St Michael and All Angels, built between 1865 and 1867 by Benjamin Ferrey, is a large church constructed from rock-faced red sandstone with tiled roofs. It features a nave, chancel, south aisle, north tower, and north porch. The nave includes plate traceried two-light windows, while the north aisle has two and three-light cusped arch lancets. At the west end of the nave, there is a wheel window. The chancel is adorned with lancets and a three-light east window that has geometric tracery. The gabled north porch has an arch supported by scalloped corbels. The north tower is characterized by shallow setback buttresses with set-offs and two-light bell openings, topped with a stone broach spire that has one tier of lucarnes. A polygonal stair turret is located halfway up the tower. Inside, the north arcade features forward half bays with circular marble piers and richly carved composite capitals. The chancel arch is supported by corbels with short marble shafts, and the nave has an arch-braced roof.
